About This Hot Mess

Shelly Stephens

I am a thirty…something, Mom to two amazing kids. I married the love of my life in my early twenties and we have overcome every obstacle we have faced together, ever since. Married life is challenging but it also has its rewards. I may be furious with him for leaving his wet towel on the floor right in front of the hamper, and then feel nothing but love for him when he comes home from work and the first thing he does is kiss me “Hello”. He is everything I never thought I deserved.

We have both, a son, Nicholas (10yrs) and a daughter, Chelsea (8yrs). They have both been diagnosed with severe forms of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Nicholas struggles with controlling his emotions; whereas Chelsea struggles with defiance and outbursts. They both have trouble with their impulsive actions/statements. Together, we all work through these challenges daily.

I have my Associates of Applied Science Degree in Culinary Arts and I worked in the Food & Beverage Industry for over a decade. Where I have had many different positions in the industry, my favorite position was working in the Bakery at the University of Georgia Hotel & Conference Center in Athens, GA. I also ran a cake shop (Shelly’s Sweets) out of my house for a while. I enjoy being able to teach my kids not only how to cook; but also how to be creative with it. I love hearing my kids ask if it’s their turn to help cook dinner or if they can help bake cookies.

I am CRAZY OBSESSED with coffee! The Nectar of the Gods!! – To those that know and love me, I am never without coffee. Iced or hot, black or with cream, americano or cappucino, I always have a cup somewhere nearby. I once kept a Keurig in my cubicle at work so that I wouldn’t have to walk to the break room for a refill. One of my co-workers dubbed me Coffee Goddess and it stuck. Besides, what woman doesn’t want to be called a Goddess?!?

I also LOVE to DIY. Shoutout to Pinterest for always being there for me. (You da REAL MVP!) Refurbishing, repurposing, reusing, recycling, reorganizing, labeling, painting, cooking, baking or whatever I can think of, Pinterest is where it’s at!

I wanted the opportunity to share all of what this chaotic, busy and crazy life has been and continues to be for us. My hope is that I can lend a helpful voice to those parents striving to get through each day with their child’s ADHD and all of the manifestations that it comes with. I will never claim to know what’s right for anyone else’s child. I can only comment on our children and what we have experienced.

I grew up learning that there is nothing in this world worth having that’s not worth working hard for and if you’re going to start something, you’d better finish it too! So here goes!
